Founded in 1988, Cartoons and Cocktails is the largest annual auction of editorial cartoons in the United States. Professionals like you from all over the country are now the proud owners of unique, original hand-drawn or printed/signed cartoon art with final bids ranging from as low as $10. Renowned American and international cartoonists donate their work to the auction each year. They include Pulitzer-Prize winners Tony Auth, Steve Breen, Mark Fiore, Tom Toles, Signe Wilkinson and many others. |
|
|
Your ticket gives you access to the silent and live auctions, impressive food spread (catered by Wolfgang Puck), one free drink ticket (cash bar if you want more!) and a bid paddle. You will have the opportunity to stroll the room and inspect the highly-collectible cartoons before the silent and live auctions begin. And don’t forget to introduce yourself to the several cartoonists, live in action, drawing the special Art-In-Action posters, also to be auctioned off to the highest bidders. Or for a special keepsake, have your image hand-drawn by our caricature artist. |

You will probably recognize some of the cartoons being auctioned. Many of them were published in major newspapers and magazines. They cover the major news events of the year and are highly prized by collectors. What better way to remember the year than via a cartoon!
For the first time ever, this year's event will be held on the 7th floor of the beautiful Newseum in downtown D.C. and is destined to be bigger and better than ever! Take your refreshments out to the large terrace and enjoy the wonderful views overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue and the Capitol building (weather permitting). |

Young D.C. and the Cartoonists Rights Network, International
Young D.C. offers teenagers in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area training opportunities and hands-on experience with news media including leadership opportunities and professional connections that can prepare them for careers of their choice. We hope many of these careers will be in journalism. Young D.C sponsors the independent monthly newspaper, Young D.C.; a independent, metro-area newspaper that brings teen journalists from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia together to form a unique cross-cultural, racial and geographic staff. Young D.C. is distributed free to over 25,000 young people through high schools, libraries, youth organizations, and retail outlets.
Through its coaching program, journalists and communcation professionals team up with local teens from diverse backgrounds for coaching, story editing, and career counseling.
The Cartoonists Rights Network, International (CRNI) is a U.S.-based international nonprofit organization devoted to helping editorial cartoonists who face censorship, imprisonment, intimidation—sometimes death—due to their commentary. Each year, several CRNI clients donate cartoons for Cartoons & Cocktails. CRNI seeks relief for endangered cartoonists through communication with diplomatic missions, ministries of state and civil society organizations. Its website links visitors to breaking news about threats to free expression, its affiliated organizations and additional resources. CRNI gives an annual award for Courage in Editorial Cartooning to the cartoonist who is in the most danger in the world and who has shown exemplary courage in the face of threats, harassment and legal actions. CRNI maintains the world's only archive of the cartoons that precipitated a human rights attack against the cartoonist: the Art To Die For archive. CRNI can supply public speakers who, using the Art To Die For archive, look at freedom of expression issues as they impact the cartooning world including a special look at the confluence of cartoonists, censorship and religious sensibilities.
Just announced: Also on exhibit at Cartoons and Cocktails this year will be Cartoonists Remember 9/11, the work of more than 90 artists that who dedicated their Sunday, September 11, comic strips to those who lost their lives in the attack. This view-only display features some of America’s most popular and beloved comic-strip characters. The comic syndicates participating in the “Cartoonists Remember 9/11” project were King Features Syndicate, Creators Syndicate, Tribune Media Services, Universal Press Syndicate and the Washington Post Writers Group. You won't want to miss this moving and occasionally humorous tribute.
